AI can help with schedules, preference cards, inventory, and documentation, but it does not replace the person maintaining the sterile field while a procedure changes. Federal projections show about 115,600 jobs, 4.5% growth, and 7,000 openings a year. The path is steady, but not protected like a fully licensed clinician role.

The watch item is uneven regulation and moderate demand. Certification matters, and robotic surgery can make the role more technical, but not every state has the same legal gate or wage leverage. The federal data uses the surgical technologist occupation directly, so the demand signal is role-specific; the weaker point is how much the credential protects the worker. Check program quality: clinical case volume, certification pass rates, hospital partners, and exposure to robotic, cardiac, orthopedic, neuro, or other high-complexity service lines.
