Roughly 1.09 million people work in this occupation, and annual openings are around 66,000, but national projections show a modest decline. That puts the score below elementary, not outside durable territory.
This is the secondary route, not the multi-subject elementary route. You usually prepare around a subject area, then add the state's secondary teaching certification. For middle school, check your state carefully: one state may route it through a K-8 endorsement, while another expects subject-specific preparation closer to high school. Before committing, compare your subject's local demand, student-teaching rules, certification tests, salary schedule, class size, and whether the job you want is lecture-heavy, lab-heavy, project-based, or hard-to-staff. The subject choice changes the risk more than the title suggests.
High school teachers who do well tend to like a subject enough to explain it repeatedly without acting bored, and they can set boundaries with teenagers without turning every conflict into a power struggle. The job suits people who can grade fairly, speak clearly, manage parent and administrator pressure, and keep caring after a rough class period. The underexpected demand is emotional stamina: you are teaching content, but you are also managing motivation, phones, conflict, attendance, and trust.
