Computer Programmer
Computer programming is the narrow code-written-to-spec layer: taking designs, requirements, or fixes and turning them into code, scripts, tests, and documentation. AI reaches that layer directly. Federal data shows a smaller occupation than software development, projected decline, and only about 5,500 annual openings. The remaining value is legacy-system maintenance, debugging, domain-specific business rules, and the judgment to move from ticket execution toward software-developer, systems, security, or data work. The pay can still be solid, but durability is weak when the role is mainly routine code production.
The question to examine is which layer a job actually owns. A posting called programmer can still involve design, architecture, support, or production ownership; a posting that is only code translation is much more exposed. Compare training paths on whether they build software-developer judgment: reading old code, testing changes, explaining tradeoffs, handling production bugs, and understanding why the business needs the system. A narrow coding certificate is a fragile bet if it does not move you toward broader engineering or data responsibility.
Computer programmers who do best tend to like careful, exacting work inside existing systems. They can read old code without getting bored, trace bugs patiently, and translate messy business rules into predictable behavior. The underexpected demand is humility: much of the work is not inventing a new product, but understanding why an old payroll, insurance, logistics, or reporting system behaves the way it does. People who want more product ownership should compare this path with software development early.
