Cloud Engineer
Cloud engineers build and run cloud infrastructure: infrastructure-as-code (IaC), migrations, cloud networking, identity, observability, backup and recovery, security controls, cost tuning, and reliability. AI can draft configuration files, scripts, runbooks, cost summaries, and incident notes, so simple setup work is exposed. The durable part is production accountability: blast radius, rollback, identity mistakes, reliability tradeoffs, and explaining cost and risk to a team. Federal labor data does not isolate this job; the numbers here blend software-developer and network/systems-administrator rows because there is no clean Cloud Engineer occupation.
The lane to examine is ownership after the first deploy. Site reliability engineer (SRE) is a sibling title for the reliability-heavy version, while machine-learning operations work is a separate model-deployment lane. Strong roles ask you to handle incidents, permissions, observability, cost, recovery, and communication with developers and business owners. Weak roles only copy cloud templates or follow migration checklists without explaining risk. If a program teaches cloud console clicks without networking, Linux, security, failure practice, and rollback thinking, treat it as a thin path.
A strong cloud engineer usually likes systems that are invisible until they fail in production. They can reason about cost, uptime, permissions, dependencies, and risk without pretending every problem is just code. The underexpected demand is accountability: when a deployment breaks payroll, a customer app, or a security boundary, someone has to understand the environment well enough to recover, explain the tradeoff, and prevent the same failure next time under pressure.
